How would you expedite sustainable development?

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

"Given the responsibility for the development of a poor, overpopulated nation, what would you use in your long and short term plans to expedite sustainable development?"

Its a question on my geography exam and I’m not sure how to approach it. Thanks for the help.

I would use a decent law system.

Private property is essential for any country to rise above poverty.

Perhaps even land reform if the land is already controlled by a handful of elite. Of course, you raise the chance of aggrevating that handful.

I would invest my debt into infrastructure like roads, electricity, and working, clean water. In order to attract foreign investment, it’s best to have something that allows them to make their products and transport them.

A sound banking system would also be necessary.

What is the best organization to approach to get advise to start a business?

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

I want to start a business and I am simply wondering who to ask, for advise and such.

It depends on who you talk to and how the person understands your business. I’ve had good experience and bad experience, for example, with SCORE — good when the person I talked to was able to give me great marketing tips; and bad when the person I talked did not understand Web marketing.

My suggestion is to talk to various organizations/people and pick their brains and see which one can better steer you to your objectives.

Here are some places that you can try and where you can find a mentor:

- Government Mentoring Programs such as SBDCs, which works with community colleges and local business development councils to offer mentoring programs http://www.sba.gov/sbdc/sbdcnear.html ; or the Women’s Network for Entrepreneurial Training http://www.sba.gov/womeninbusiness/wnet_roundtables.html

- Volunteer programs such as SCORE http://www.score.org which is composed of mostly retired executives and entrepreneurs

- Formal mentoring programs such as Athena Foundation http://www.athenafoundation.org/programs/globallinks.html , Helzberg Entrepreneurial Mentoring Program http://www.helzbergmentoring.org/HEMP/ , or The Aspen Institute MicroMentor Program http://www.micromentor.org

- Professional organizations such as the National Women’s Business Council http://www.nwbc.gov/Mentoring/programs.html

- Industry and trade associations

- Local business groups, such as the chamber of commerce

- Local chapters of business groups

Why is it effective to approach a serious subject with satire?

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Such as with literature. Why is it effective to approach a serious subject with satire?

Satire is effective, because it takes the pain, the sorry, the fear away from the subject, in a way it humanizes it, by approaching a disturbing subject and turning it into a joke, by making extremely "wrong" comments about it.

Can there be a meeting of spirituality and science?

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

I constantly see arguing between followers of each approach; Spiritual people and hardcore atheists hardly agree with each other on anything. What I am asking is it possible for both sides to meet in the middle and use both spirituality and science to find the truths about the universe or will both sides continue there zealotry?

Absolutely. I think if science truly figured out the unifying force of nature we would figure out our past and what our ancestors were talking about, We would discover a world wrought with cyclical catastrophes and we would even discover the science of the gods themselves.

But that was never meant to be. People enjoy a good mystery.
