How can I approach the making of a complicated story?

Friday, December 18th, 2009

I want to write a story that is complicated. Meaning, I want it to have twists and a whole back story explaining why things are the way they are. I’ve already began a timeline, a plotline for my story, character developments, organization developments, etc. How else can I approach this?

Well, since I’m going through the same pains with writing my quite-complicated-and-unpredictable trilogy, I’m gonna offer you some advice.

First method you could use I call the Ribbon Technique. The RT is when you take in your entire story and you untangle each plotline, one by one, and work on each on its own. Say you have a plot that consists of a guy and girl colliding and as a result their lives are changed completely. What you do is you separate the guy’s story from the girl’s and you work on one story at a time, creating gaps or marking the places in which the girl and guy overlap.

This is quite the difficult method, since mistakes can be easily made. You can lose track of your plots altogether, but with this method you’ll be surprised how much you can learn about your novel. The characters in the Ribbon Tecnique unravel and live their own life, much like reality. Using this method, your characters are guaranteed to get that lifelike air to them.

2) The other method I use is the Rough Outline. You open a blank Microsoft Word (or whatever word processor you’re using) and you write whatever comes to your mind concerning the book. It doesn’t need to be in order. You can write:

John is tall, bald and usually smiling.

*and the suddenly you feel like writing:

It’s fall when Josie returns to college.

*or even character’s likes and dislikes or quirks:

Josie hates peaches because they leave a bitter taste in her mouth.

-Rough Outline helps you unwind your creative juices. After some twenty pages of writing tidbits about your plot and characters, or character background, you print it out and read it, re-read it, write over it with a pen or highlight what you like and cross out what you don’t like. You can do this over a cup of coffee, in the bath, on the couch or just about anywhere.

The neat thing about the Rough Outline is that it helps you develop characters. Once the character is fully developed it will talk to you and tell you their demand. I’m not kidding, mate. I have three or four fully developed chraracters in my novel and they talk to me and give me a good or bad gut feeling, telling me whether the scene I’m working on is good or whether it sucks.

That’s what I’m using.

Here’s a link to another method one successful writer developed. It’s called the Snowflake Method:

Consider using it if you don’t like my two suggestions.

Hope this helps. I got back problems looming over my laptop typing this up LOL
And it’s 6 in the morning :)

Master grad with interest in Web development. Suggestions on how to apply for job?

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

I do have a Masters grad. But I do not really have any solid experience in JAVA and Web development. Thought I am interested in the field, I am experienced only for about 6 months in it. Any help on who to approach, how to apply for jobs, websites to search from, where to submit resumes etc. ?

Many thanks.

You will need more experience than that to actually get a well paid web development job. First, volunteer your time and skills to companies looking for people to build websites for free. With a masters degree and 6 month experience, they’ll think you’re a steal. Get more experience thru there if possible.

If this is not an option, then look at job sites such as indeed.com, monster.com, dice.com and look for entry-level web development jobs.

How would you expedite sustainable development?

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

"Given the responsibility for the development of a poor, overpopulated nation, what would you use in your long and short term plans to expedite sustainable development?"

Its a question on my geography exam and I’m not sure how to approach it. Thanks for the help.

I would use a decent law system.

Private property is essential for any country to rise above poverty.

Perhaps even land reform if the land is already controlled by a handful of elite. Of course, you raise the chance of aggrevating that handful.

I would invest my debt into infrastructure like roads, electricity, and working, clean water. In order to attract foreign investment, it’s best to have something that allows them to make their products and transport them.

A sound banking system would also be necessary.

Any ideas on how to find a good research mock proposal topic, probably in stem cells/development?

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

It can’t be related to my dissertation work so I can’t use topics I already know a lot about! That’s the biggest problem. So I need to come up with a brand new idea from something I’m not working on. It needs to be in the general area of embryonic stem cells and/or development. At first I was thinking cardiovascular type development but I think I could even expand to different areas of development/differentiation. Usually I come up with my next "line" of research based on what actual research I’m doing, but this must be unrelated. I’m just trying to become an "expert" in every possible field now so I know where the good areas to explore are but that’s like trying to do 100 PhDs at once! I have been reading like crazy but I could sure use some more expert advice. If anyone has any good avenues to explore or papers/groups to watch let me know. Any ideas or suggestions? …How to approach?

Thanks.

I didn’t rely on reviews to find my mock proposal. I read current issues of Science/Nature/Cell/Neuron (or whatever you have at hand) till I found something interesting. Then I just asked what should be done next.

Then you can use reviews of the topic to get you up to speed before you dive into the primary literature concerning the topic you are going to propose.

how does business development work in a private physio center. who can be approached?

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

I need help to find out who can do business development for a private physio center. The usual referral areas dont seem to be working, so basically dont know how to promote the center and get more work

Most people who go to physio are either from doctors – or personal trainers at gyms. The other source is sports teams – consider even high school teams.

Get to personally know doctors and trainers – this can be done through personal networking at chamber meetings, rotary or other group meetings.

Another thing to consider is hosting an after hours function at your location – use the Chamber or other local organization that does these and be a host – then make sure you have proper promotional material geared towards doctors and personal trainers and sports teams. – Hand them out.
