What are the pros and cons of each of the approaches to learning?

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

Some learn by the ‘hacker’ approach, expediently, by trial and error, using different tools and methods as deemed fit for the task at hand. On the other hand, others learn by structured and operationally organised methods. Think of things you have learned by the ‘hacker’ approach, and those by the organised structured methods. What are the pros and cons of each of these approaches to learning?

There are pros and cons of the ‘hacker’ learning method and the structured method. Lets focus on the ‘try-an-error’ method first.

When we have a focus in mind, we use the ‘hacker’ method to find out more about it. We use many different methods and ways as well as sources to help us learn and to get to the topic. This way has both its pros and its cons. The pros is that you can have a wider view of things related to your topic in mind for an example, if you want to find out about different trends and fashions of modern youths. You can go online to search for the necessary information related to it, or you can interview the teenagers on the streets of Orchard road, town area and ask them about the lastest trend and many more methods of finding out about this topic.

The other pros is that people who use this ‘hacker’ method are able to be flexible in whatever they do, and are able to react to the event accordingly. There is also creativity in the mindset of the ones who use the ‘hacker’ method. They can find all ways and means to gather information related o the topic. And they are able to learn what is needed of them.

The cons of this ‘hacker’ method is that there is likely to have alot of mistakes as not all ideas will work. The person will often fail and then pass as it is the ‘trial and error’ method. And this method also wastes alot of time as when one fails, he will try to succeed again and he will continue trying till he succeeds, thus wating alot of time. This is also very chaotic and it is often hard to share or analyze them.

Now lets talk about the pros and cons of structural learning. Structural learning is the systematic way to do thing, in a more organised and step-by-step way to solve problems by breaking the information up or by building it up bit by bit. The pros of using the structural way is we will be able to have the in depth understanding of the issue. For the instance, If we want to find out about the teenage trends and latest craze, we will go in depth into the issue, breaking it up from step one. Understanding bit by bit, gather what is being processed, then we put them all back up into one piece. Another pros of this learning method is that it is more organised, and likely to get the correct information required. And it will save alot of time as we go straight into what information we need, putting aside what is unimportant and focusing on the topic.

The cons of the structured learning method is that learning migt be restricted as it is strictly focused on the topic and nothing else. And it will lack creativity as compared to using the ‘hcker’ method.

So in conclusion, learning takes place in different ways and forms. Thus our learning takes place all the time amd we possess different types of learning.

The different types of learning will be covered soon..When someone asks..^^

Thank You.

What is the best approach to learning the guitar?

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

I have had an acoustic guitar lying around for a long time now and everynow and then, i fish it out and play a few chords (3 that i know….G, E minor and C)….I have full music theory knowledge as i have played the piano for 12 years and studied music theory for a long time….i just don’t know how to approach learning the guiter though…I do not wish to learn the guiter from a teacher, but sorta want to self learn something of my own. Is it better to learn all the chords first as in A, A minor, A d7….or learn songs with the chords along the way??
and there are so many chords which are so far to stretch and i basically have to stop playing and physcially stretch my fingers to reach the strings…is there a easy way to play these chords, unless they require large hands?

THANKS

best site ever for learning guitar, you should start just learning simple songs and you will pick up chords as you go, memorizing the notes on the fretboard also helps alot if you know alot of theory. also practice using all 4 fingers cause you will need them, but mostly you have to practice the same chords over and over, and eventually they will get easier.
