Has anyone tried using the Pimsleur Approach language learning program?

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

their ad says "100% guaranteed, speak in 10 days or you don’t pay"
it sound like an exaggeration to me. has anyone had any experience with this program?

Pimsleur is good. I find it’s very helpful with pronunciation and it will help get you speaking. Just don’t expect to become fluent from it. You won’t become fluent from any of these courses. If you can get Pimsleur at a good price, buy it.

Actually, my favorite beginner course is Michel Thomas. It makes you manipulate sentences and pronouns. I also thought the student-teacher format was helpful. This one is generally cheaper than Pimsleur and it’s a good introduction (8 hours). That’s not to say it’s without flaw.

does task centred approach work with adults with learning disabilities?

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

i am doing an essey on tadk centred approach with adults with learning disabilities, so does it work

yes…but you are going to need some specific data and research to back it up…i work in a program for developmentaly delayed adults where they help refurbish computers for day care centers and churches…once you teach them what it is they have to do and how to do it then they generally work at a very high level to produce an outcome…as for stats, 3s and %s you are going to have to do some research…

Has anyone tried the Pimsleur Approach to learning a language?

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

If so, did it work the way it was supposed to? Thanks to any answers.

EASY TEN POINTS TO WHOEVER ANSWERS WITH BEST EXPANATION AS TO HOW WELL IT WORKED!! ☺☻♥☻☺ PLEASE ANSWER ME, I ALWAYS GET IGNORED ON THIS SITE!!!

First of all, I’m semi-serious about learning a new language, and am under no time constraints. With that said.
I’ve used the old Pimsleur cassettes. Yes,they are good and the narrator talks slowly so that you can hear every syllable. However, I’ve found some value in using more than one teaching approach.
Penton Overseas, Inc. has a three disc set for beginners. You can listen while driving. The best thing is that the discs come with a booklet that corresponds to the audio. You can see the words in English, in the language and a transliteration. (reading the booklet is not advisable while driving :) Very good. However, it emphasizes learning for travel (maybe 35% or so); "I would like a larger room" ," How far to the train station", etc.
Bilingual Books, Inc. produces those "Learn _______ in ten minutes a Day" books. If you are a visual learner, this is for you.
Hope that you get some more responses.

Programme design for learning (Part 1)

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

A paper entitled “Programme design that puts the “me” back into learning experiences and spaces” that was presented by Hazel Owen. It was give virtually at the DEANZ 2008 conference “My Place, My Space, My Learning” – Distance and Virtual Education Sunday 17 August – Wednesday 20 August Te Papa Tongarewa, Museum of New Zealand, Wellington (http://www.deanz.org.nz/conf2008).

The abstract: “A key objective of tertiary education is to foster fundamental shifts in learners’ understanding of what learning and thinking comprises, and the role they perform. Learning theorists stress the requirement that students are involved in process-based, experiential activities. The design of curricula and courses must therefore encourage engagement with tasks, peers, teachers and the community.
This paper outlines a forty-week Computer, Research Skills and Projects (CRSP) course developed for Foundation students at Dubai Men’s College (DMC) using a blended learning approach underpinned by socio-cultural principles and an Activity Theory (AT) framework, and reports briefly on the ociated research study.”

Please cite appropriately :-) – thanks.

How does it work?
Did it work for you?

I used Pimsleur I-III to start my learning German.

It will give you a good base of german words and the langauge will be with you like English.

What it will not do is make you fluent. Give you an indepth explanation why some words take certain features. It is also lacking Vocabulary.

What is the best approach to learning math? probability?

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

before i withdraw from class
i meant to say how to go about rememberin steps to learning probability cuz i seem to jus forget alot of stuff.

Well, probability is ONE way to learn math, I suppose. But probably the best way is to stay in school.

[ADDED] Oh, sorry. OK, here’s the deal with probability. Just remember that probability is simply a ratio (or a fraction, if you prefer). Like this:

(Outcome You’re Looking For)
——————————————
(All Possible Outcomes)

Let’s substitute into this to make discussion easier…

N

D

So, N (numerator) is what you’re looking for, and D (denominator) is everything possible in that situation.

EXAMPLE:

You flip a normal coin two times. Let’s use H for heads, T for tails. Now, there are four possible pairs of outcomes…

HH
HT
TH
TT

That means that D = 4, meaning that their are 4 possible outcomes in the whole universe of flipping a coin two times.

Now, can you see the probability of getting HEADS on at least one toss of a coin if you toss it twice? Look and see how many outcomes have at least one H.

3 of them, right? So, N = 3

Probability of getting heads when you flip a coin twice is…

3

4
