I would supplement it with a basic Japanese Grammar book, and a dictionary. Those two things will help tremendously I learned most of my Japanese through reading books, and when I started Rosetta stone I already knew most of the things that were presented to me. Rosetta Stone - Japanese is OK; as you point out, sometimes it is not the least bit clear what the photo is trying to convey, and indeed there is a certain built-in ambiguity because there is virtually nothing in the way of explanations of grammar, etc. You're supposed to intuit everything. If you're going to use RS, you need to realize that it will simply provide you with a conversational base. If you really want to LEARN the language (and not just study it), you'll need to supplement RS with grammar books and other learning aids.
