The P-Funk Era

As George Clinton commented, “P-Funk clientele has always been a peculiar mix of ages, sexes, races, and nationalities and faiths…” (Vincent, p. xiv) For these groups not being successful was purely a result of a lack of unity. When they realized that if any group of people ever got together long enough, they could do anything, the face of music history changed. Howard Harris, author of The Complete Book of Improvisation, Composition and Funk Techniques, describes the essence of funk music: “Funk is a style of music in which elements of jazz, pop, rock, gospel and the Blues are fused…” “It is, in essence, togetherness in motion.” (Vincent p.15)
