How True-Believing theists cope when science contradicts Scripture: the literalist approach vs. the allegorical approach. (This is a re-make of a video I had made back in Nov 2007, which I had then called “Science, religion, and ‘truth’ vs. ‘Truth’.”)

This video is based of the following material from “Dialogue with a Christian Proselytizer”:

* Science and “Truth” (endnote 2)
* Christianity vs. Copernicus and Galileo (endnote 9)
* Faith Alone” vs. “Faith & Facts” (endnote 38)
* excerpts of dialogue between the book’s two characters: Chris Proselman, the proselytizer; and “Scott Crates,” the skeptic

My four YouTube channels:

- http://youtube.com/user/ToddGates – my musician channel

- http://youtube.com/user/ToddAllenGates – where I discuss the ideas in my book “Dialogue with a Christian Proselytizer” (a dialogue between a Christian proselytizer and a Socratic skeptic)

- http://youtube.com/user/ToddAllenGates2 – where I discuss the ideas in my book “Hunting, Gathering, & Videogames” (such as “Why do we have to work?” and “Why do we have to use money?” and “How should we define ’success’?”)

- http://youtube.com/user/BlasphemyPiano – where I play the background piano accompaniment for songs in Nick Gisburne’s book of lyrics “Blasphemy! Anthems for Atheists.”

    When someone lays …
When someone lays his opinions out with such clarity and does so in a polite dignified manner, it seems to beg for a similar response. If you disagree and have new arguments, state them.

    I cant take anyone …
I cant take anyone serious who takes this guy serious. Science has proved the bible correct. The bible doesnt say the earth isnt round. The Bible never said the earth doesnt rotate, or that the sun isnt the center of our solar system. Keep believing your evolution religion. And dont let your evolved emotions get in the way.

    They might as well. …
They might as well. The Jesus bunch had to lay low for a bit after his execution, so it is not hard to fathom that the truth did come out decades later and was written accordingly.

    Are you saying that …
    Are you saying that:
“People should only listen to what other people wrote decades later, that those writers claimed to have been said by Jesus?”
    ———————————–
Why is the rest a waste of energy?
What about what the Holy Ghost said?
Why would what was written that Jesus said, be more important than what was written on what the Holy Ghost said, or more important than what was written that the Father said?

    TOO kind but thank you!!

    It is a logical …
It is a logical umption none the less.

The alternative is to explain how the universe may have always existed with in fact it is expanding and moving therefore it must have had a starting point.

This is one of my favorite Stephen Hawking quotes.. ” We can now determine that the universe spontaneously formed out of nothing.”

By nothing he meant nothing we can scientifically quantify.

  11. Poseidon500 Says:

    Well, I believe …
Well, I believe that a lot of God’s will is indeed within the bible, however those who argue in favor of the creation myth are argueing a moot point. It really does not matter. Christians should only listen to what Christ has to say in the Bible, the rest really does not really matter and is a waste of time and energy.

The bible is indeed falable. A type of evolution has definately occoured. I agree with you, so you must be talking about the true believers who are Biblical literalists.

    > Not all theists believe in the creation myth.

    Hi Poseidon500,

True, I acknowledge that not all theists–and specifically, not all Christians–believe in the Bible’s creation myth.

I in fact note this in this video: from 1:23 to 2:00 I mention how my only focus is on those believers who interpret the Bible as His Infallible Will, and that Christians who take the more liberal the-Bible-is-fallible approach fall outside the scope of this particular video.

I take it that you mean “don’t let the votebots get you down” … in fact, they’ve lifted me *up* quite a bit—in the last three days I’ve gotten over 500 new subs!

“the catalyst that made it happen, will be impossible to explain without uming a willfull act of creating it.”

    Thank you.

This ertion is what I wanted to get out of you. Now could you please explain how your creation moment has more explanatory power than simply saying “We don’t know.” You have created a larger puzzle for yourself by making the worlds largest umption.

  18. Poseidon500 Says:

Oh I se. You are …
Oh I se. You are one of those people who overly complicate things. : )

Science may one day explain the universe from it’s very beginning, but as to how it happened, the catalyst that made it happen, will be impossible to explain without uming a willfull act of creating it.

  19. HumanStrategy Says:

    “My creation moment …
“My creation moment may one day be proven by science.”

You do understand that there is a difference between stating that your “creation moment” will be proven by science and the actually explanation as to what your “creation moment” actually is, do you not?

Also, the word “proven” is something which is used in mathematics. Our understanding of science is through the evidence supported for a proposition and is, by definition of the scientific process, a tentative conclusion or “proof”.

  20. Poseidon500 Says:

    My creation moment …
My creation moment may one day be proven by science. The Big Bang theory for example. The creation myth will never be proven by science.

So then, you are a …
So then, you are a theist, which by definition means that you believe in a god of some sort, however you take offense at his statements in the video and IMO sound like you’re hedging your bets epistemologically.

How is your creation moment any different from the myth described in the Bible? Is this an ertion or do you have more explanatory power to support how they are wrong and you are right?

  25. Poseidon500 Says:
